Candles to Cups: DIY upcycle

Published on 31 May 2024 at 09:06

Lately I've been thinking about how many candles I go through.  It's no feat for me to easily blow through 10-12 candles a month, do I have a problem? I guess I'll leave that up to you to decide. I have been thinking about the amount of otherwise perfectly good glass containers that end up in my trash. What can I do with these? How can I waste less? The idea came to me a few days ago when I was talking with my mom about how over the years most of our drinking glasses have ended up getting broken. Leaving us with mainly coffee mugs and a few plastic souvenir cups to use.  "This could be a way to not only save some money, but also reuse a lot of these old candle jars," I thought to myself.

So, first things first, what all do we need for this project? just some old candle jars, water, and if you want. Some painters tape and frosted glass spray. Next, how do we get the last of that wax out? A very simple, mess free process. Just boil some water and pour it into the jar. The water will melt the wax, but water and wax don't mix. Meaning the wax will float to the top and eventually harden as the water cools. Meaning all you have to do is remove the disk of hardened wax. Now you will have to repeat this process a few times, all the wax won't come up on the first try.

After the process of removing the wax you'll have to remove the wick base. It's usually glued down pretty well, so you'll want more hot water and to gently pry it with a butter knife. After you've gotten that pesky wick base out just wash the jar well with some dish soap and water. Get any remaining sticky spots or left over wax spots off of it. Make sure it's fully dried before you move on the the next step.

Once the glass is fully cleaned and dried, tape off the top part about an inch and a half down. This will protect the rim from getting  any frosted glass spray on it.

Next take it outside and frost it up to the way you like it. Give it time to dry, usually doesn't take too long.  Then bring it inside and check out your masterpiece!

That's as easy as it is! I actually think they're pretty cute. Larger candle jars can be used to numerous other DIY projects. Just get creative and let those ideas flow.  What are some good ideas for reusing old candle jars you have? leave me a comment below and let's swap ideas.
