This morning I walked half asleep into my less than pristine kitchen, shout out to two sick children and a sick husband. My hopes and dreams of being a perfect house wife are nowhere to be seen. A few moments of silence to myself, then I heard the happy calls from my one year old. Announcing to the world that she's awake and ready to go. Shortly thereafter my two year emerged, rested and full of energy that I can only imagine having.
Next thing on the agenda, breakfast. Looking into my pantry it's not quite full at the moment. Grocery shopping seemed like something that could wait until a more convenient time. As luck would have it my fridge has eggs, simple, delicious, and nutritious. Eggs and toast, a classic American breakfast. There's just one more problem now, my bread box is empty. Not one crumb to be found. So, I need something to feed my growing family, something that won't take hours and hours to make. Then I remembered a recipe I've had for ages. A simple no nonsense recipe for a single loaf of breakfast bread. My tiny kitchen was soon busy with the sounds of two toddlers happily playing, and the smell of fresh bread.
First, combine the water, honey, salt, and yeast into a large mixing bowl. let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes.
After the ten minutes is up, add in 4 Cups of flour and stir until combined ( it will be sticky) Turn your dough out onto a floured surface and knead it until it becomes smooth and elastic. Form the dough into a simple loaf shape and cover with a towel.
Allow the dough to rise covered for 20 minutes. While dough is rising, preheat oven to 400. Uncover dough after 20 minutes, cut a few slits in the top, and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Bred should have a nice golden brown color to the crust when done. Remove from the oven and brush some butter over the top to soften up the crust. Enjoy fresh from the oven or cool it and toast it.
Homemade bread as simple as that! Add this recipe to your last minute life savers. You can also add your own variations, cinnamon bread, herb bread, let's share ideas of ways to make this recipe even better.
